Cordaid
Cordaid is the driving force behind Memisa, Caritas Netherlands and the Dutch Lenten campaign and is one of the leading international development organisations.
Effective and efficient financial services directed to the poor are an important prerequisite for gradually improving the poor’s financial and economic perspectives. Microfinance institutions can offer these services and have an important role to play in supporting policies of poverty reduction.
Cordaid’s mission in this respect is to support emerging MFIs. These are organisations operating – often small – savings and/or credit programmes which have the intention to develop into financially sustainable organisations having their appropriate governance, management and personnel structure. Cordaid’s Finance Business Unit offers seed capital as well as loan and guarantee capital to support these emerging MFIs. Sometimes this is supplemented by grant funding for capacity building from Cordaid’s regional departments.
Cordaid also favours the building of networks of financial institutions, MFIs as well as ‘traditional’ banks, for information exchange, sharing of good practices and lobbying.
